Extreme office furniture makeovers
Posted under office furnitureOffice Solutions
Sticking with our makeover theme, you may want to think twice before you scrap your old office furniture. Rather than sending it off to a landfill, think sustainability instead. With that thought in mind, furniture-maker Haworth Inc. and students from Archeworks, Chicago’s alternative design school, joined forces to devise a strategy for extending the life of office furniture by developing innovative uses for it once its traditional “end of life” has been reached.
The guiding principle was to reduce the quantity of office furniture sent to landfills. According to Environmental Protection Agency estimates, approximately 3 million tons of office furniture and furnishings are discarded each year.
Among the furniture students creatfrom discarded systems panels and overhead storage bins were a toy box, a day bed, and a product called the Unit for Living (pictured), a piece that incorporates a bed, storage, and a desk.
